Guidance for Applicants

The following information gives a brief overview of our recruitment process. Where it is necessary, additional guidance has been provided. Ensuring that you provide information to us when required will ensure that we can process your application as quickly as possible and avoid any delays to interview or start dates.

Applying for a position

Our job adverts will direct you to this Microsite which holds more information about the careers that we offer. Each advert will have further included:-

  • Information Pack – including job description, person specification and details of who to contact for more information.
  • Application Pack – Requesting you to provide a full CV and asking you to complete information on references, responsible officer, declarations/convictions, immigration status and equal opportunities monitoring.

Your full CV and application pack should be forwarded to the HR contact by the closing date. On completing your CV please ensure this includes all relevant dates and any gaps in your career are explained.


When shortlisted against the criteria on the person specification you will be invited to attend an interview. The interview will be chaired by a medical manager and may include several members on the panel including an external assessor or a training programme director (where appropriate for the grade).

Prior to interview the following pre-interview checks will be completed:-

  • Receipt of references.
  • Verification of Identity – You will be advised on the relevant documents to bring to interview.
  • Professional Registration Check – Completed through the GMC website.
  • Immigration Check – e.g. through passport stamps. Further guidance on eligibility to work in the UK is available on UK Government Immigration

Following the interview

You will be advised by phone whether you have been successful or not at interview. If successful you will receive a verbal offer of employment and, if accepted, you will then receive a provisional offer of employment. The offer is provisional subject to further pre-employment checks:-

  • Responsible Officer (RO) checks – This will ask your current RO to confirm details of employment, revalidation and appraisal dates, details of concerns, investigations, complaints and referrals to other bodies e.g. GMC.
  • Appraisal and Revalidation Checks – Both appraisal and revalidation should be up to date when applying for positions. You will be required to provide e.g. Form 4 or ARCP evidence.
  • Medical and Health screening – forms will be issued to complete screening through Occupational Health.
  • 2nd Reference Checks – to confirm any sickness absence from your previous employer.
  • Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) – You will be required to complete either a new member or existing scheme member application form. A form will be submitted to you for completion (submitted by NES for junior posts). Further guidance how to complete a PVG form is available on Disclosure Scotland - PVG Form Guidance
  • Criminal Record Status for overseas candidates – if applicable this is carried out in addition to the PVG check. If you are a non EEA National and are currently based out with the UK a Country of Origin check/criminal records certificate will also be required from each country in which you have resided continuously or cumulatively for 12 months or more in the last 10 years.

On satisfactory completion of all pre-employment checks a start date will be confirmed and a contract of employment issued.

Interview Expenses

Interview expenses may be incurred for candidates on point of entry to the UK and paid in line with terms and conditions of service. Expenses should be authorised in advance of your interview.
